Opening a bank account in North Cyprus
A local bank account makes buying a home, paying bills and getting residency much easier. Here is how to open one as a foreigner in 2026.
Short answer
Foreigners over 18 can open a bank account in North Cyprus. Bring your passport, proof of your home address and, at many banks, a TRNC address or residence permit. You can hold GBP, EUR, USD and Turkish lira. Book an appointment first: opening usually takes a few days. Banks will ask where your money comes from, so bring proof.
What you need to open an account
These are the papers most banks ask for in 2026. Bring originals and copies.
What to bring to the bank
| Document | Needed? | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Always | Valid, with copies. Some banks won't accept a driving licence as ID. |
| Proof of home address | Usually | A recent utility bill or bank statement from your home country. |
| TRNC address | Some banks | A residence certificate from the muhtar, or your property contract. |
| Residence or work permit | Some banks | Often asked for full current accounts. Not always needed for savings. |
| Proof of income or source of money | Often | Payslips, pension letter or the sale of a home. Banks must check this. |
| Bank reference letter | Some banks | From your bank at home. Ask for it before you travel. |
| Account fees and stamp duty | Always | Small one-off fees, paid at the branch. |
Every bank is a little different. Call or book ahead and ask for their list. Bring originals and copies of everything.
Which account do you need?

| Foreign currency account (GBP, EUR, USD) | Property payments and keeping money in your own currency |
